During the ancient time, the English Governor S.Farlet CCS, under his guidance and support from villagers, “Kurunduwatha Tamil School” was started in the mosque land on the 2nd Of July 1923. In 1923, the school was known as “Kurunduwatha Tamil School” and Since 1996 November 12 it was named as “Zahira National College” by the education minister Richard Pathirana.

English medium classes were started in 2013. The first English batch was sat on G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in 2018.

Advanced Level commerce and Arts fields were started in 1988 and on 2006 advanced level biology and Maths Streams were started. Many students in Commerce and Arts streams have obtained a degree and diploma and they work in a good position in various fields as qualified Accountants, Teachers, and Government officers. Every year students are selected for Government Universities and College of Educations as well as many students follow professional fields such as Chartered accountancy and CIMA.

Also, G/ Zahira College is well known for Football at Island level. It has a great identification in football not only Provincial level but also in Island Level. It has won many awards in football. As well as in Tamil Day and other competitions, it has shown best performances.
