About Zahira

Gintota Zahira College is situated in Galle which is the capital of Southern Province. During the ancient time the English Governor S.Farlet CCS has had a thought of building a school in village Gintota. So, under his guidance and support from villagers, “Kurunduwatta Tamil School” was started in the mosque land on the 2nd of July 1923. Those days verandas of the houses were the places where the lessons were taught. But unlike that, constructing a building to carry on the education showed the villagers’ concern towards study.

This was started with 17 students and with a head master M.T.Kabrayal. Sakarya was the first name to be marked in the register.

Since 1923 the school was known as “Kurunduwatta Tamil School”. Later on 1963- 03-11 the school was upgraded as “Kurunduwatta Muslim Maha Vidyalaya”. Later on 1982-09-01 it was upgraded as G/Zahira Muslim Maha Vidyalaya by the parliament member W.Dahanayaka. On 1993-07-19 it was upgraded as “Zahira Central College” and on 1996-11-12 as “Zahira National College” by the Education Minister Richard Pathirana.

English Medium
English medium classes were started on 2013-01-02 with 20 students. The first English batch was sat on G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in 2018. Many English medium students have achieved great results in G.C.E. Ordinary level Examination.

Advance Level Streams
Advanced Level commerce and Arts fields were started on 1988-08-22 and on 2006- 06-20 advanced level Biology and Maths Streams were started. Many students in Commerce and Arts streams have obtained degrees and Diploma and they work in good positions in various fields as qualified Accountants, Teachers, and Government officers. Every year students are selected for Government Universities and College of Educations as well as many students follow professional fields such as Chartered Accountancy and CIMA.

Sports and other Extra-Curricular activities.
G/ Zahira College is well known in Football at the Island level. It has a great identification in Football not only Provincial level, but also in Island Level. It has won many awards in football. As well as in Tamil day and other competitions it has shown best performances.
